Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a Public Health major to apply?

Nope! Our program encourages students from all majors to apply. Public Health is an interdisciplinary field and values different perspectives.

Can non-UCLA students participate in the program?

Yes! We welcome students that attend an institution in the US or in a US territory to apply.

I am a community college student. Am I eligible to apply?

Yes! Community college graduates or transfers to four-year institutions are eligible to apply.

I am a freshman but have sophomore standing due to credit hours. Can I still apply?

We require all applicants to have two years of undergraduate education regardless of credit hours or standing.

I am an international student. Am I eligible to apply?

Unfortunately, we are unable to receive applications from students outside the United States.

Will the Summer 2024 program will be in-person or virtual?

We will be prepared for an in-person program but may incorporate virtual events. Programming decisions are ultimately based on guidance from the CDC, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and UCLA.

I have prior commitments that would require me to end my participation before the full 8 weeks. Is the program flexible with participation dates?

We are seeking applicants that can be present for the full eight weeks of the program.

I am applying to graduate school programs. Am I still eligible for the UCLA Public Health Scholars Training Program?

Yes, students are welcome to apply. However, if a student accepts and enrolls into a graduate program before the start of the program, they will be deemed ineligible to participate. Our program will provide decisions March 1, 2023.

How do I arrange my travel for the program?

Scholars that do not live within a 300-mile radius of UCLA will have their transportation to and from Los Angeles arranged by the program team. Checked luggage, local mileage and transportation to and from the airport will not be reimbursed.

Where do students live during the program?

Scholars will be housed in university housing. More details will be available in early spring 2024.

How much is the stipend?

Scholars receive a $3,000 stipend, $800 to cover some meals, and $200 for optional transportation. The total amount of $4,000 is distributed in three installments throughout the program (start of program, halfway, and a week after program completion). NOTE: this amount is not meant to cover all costs associated with the program. It is the scholar’s discretion how the funds are allocated for personal use.
